Recreation and Inclusion
Recreation and Inclusion Program Overview
Many persons with physical disabilities and seniors can face barriers to participating fully in the community. Some of the barriers include inaccessible buildings or sidewalks, access to transportation, fixed and/or low income and lack of personal support.
Guelph Independent Living strives to provide inclusion opportunities and remove barriers. Every year the organization provides social and recreational opportunities to its clients. From concerts to sporting events, these valued activities enhance quality of life, independence and promote full integration into the community by:
- reducing social isolation, as clients may have little or no family and other supports;
- reducing financial obstacles;
- helping clients with personal care while participating in community events
GIL shares the cost of (some of) these activities with clients; the amount of subsidy depends on the cost of the event. Funding to support activities comes from the United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin, community foundations, community fundraising efforts and from donations from caring individuals … like you!
